Wedding Gown Tips

As I've mentioned in numerous blogs, the wedding gown is the main "centerpiece" of the ceremony and sets the tone for much of the wedding day design.  Prior to putting on your fabulous wedding gown for the walk down the aisle, remember the following:

  • Bring your wedding day shoes (and undergarments) to your first fitting and every fitting thereafter to avoid an uneven hemline.
  • Don't select jewelry that has protruding edges that can tear or snag your gown.
  • Once you bring your gown home, make sure to hang it from the loops INSIDE the gown.  The loops are reinforced within the side seams and can carry the weight of the heavy fabric.
  • When getting the gown pressed, make sure to use a cleaners that HAND PRESSES wedding gowns.
  • Be sure to eat, drink and use the restroom before putting on your wedding gown.
  • When the moment comes to put on your gown, make sure your hands are clean and the persons helping you into the gown have clean hands.

Perfectly Fit Wedding Gown

You will spend hours looking for the most perfect wedding gown to showcase your personal style and personality for the most exciting day of your life.  But once you have found your dream gown, there are alterations to consider.

When it comes to tailoring, make sure you budget at least $200-$500 for proper alterations and bustling.  And I'd suggest you allow the bridal salon's tailor to handle the fitting.  Once you remove the gown from the premises, it's yours to keep, and any "mishaps" from a non-professional tailor could have you looking for another gown.  Consider the brief timeline below for the perfect fit:
  • First Fitting - should occur approximately 3 months before the wedding.  Please bring your wedding day shoes and undergarments to this fitting so that the tailor can accurately pin the seems and hem.
  • Second Fitting - should occur approximately 1 month before the wedding.  If you have been dieting, make this the time goal date for your targeted weight because this is the last time the tailor can make any major alterations to your gown.
  • Third (Final) Fitting - should occur one week before the BIG DAY.  This is the visit for those last minute tweeks and final gown pressing.

Ruffles Ruffles Everywhere!

If you haven't seen the latest wedding trend, today I'm going to ruffle your feathers and show you. This uber feminine look is increasing on the runways, decor and even wedding cakes.  Ruffles, probably as girly as pigtails, has truly taken charge in 2012.  Check out a few of the ideas below on where you can utilize ruffles :)

Ruffle detailing on a wedding cake.
So gorgeous it doesn't even need a topper!

Adding textured linens throughout the reception space speaks volumes!

"Ruffled" bouquet handles created from ribbon for these gorgeous roses.

Gorgeous, yet simple, ruffled clutch would make a sweet bridesmaid gift
or be perfect for your bridal accessories.
Wedding gowns with pick-ups are being replaced by piles of ruffles!

Yes I said it! Everyone is all about the Bling craze and I know that to be true because our most popular blog posts to this day are about Bling. But remember the sequin? Seeing Red...Literally!

I'm so thankful for Twitter and Facebook and the industry professionals who posted pictures from New York City's Bridal Market showcasing the newest trends for Spring 2013.  Well I was completely overwhelmed by the vibrant colors and textures that the designers were using.  But the color that caught my eye...my favorite color...RED...truly caught my eye!  Tell me what you think.  Would you wear red on your wedding day?

Beautiful Bride Countdown

As you move forward with planning your wedding, don't forget about your wedding day look.  I'm not speaking of your gown and accessories, but about your hair and make-up for the big day.  Even for the most beautiful bride, and you all will be on your BIG day, the regime should begin months in advance to avoid the horrified scream in the mirror when your eye shadow is blue and your hair looks like it did in the 80's :)  Consider the timeline below when scheduling your beauty appointments:

8-12 months before the BIG Day
Consult a trainer or create a workout plan
Discuss skin concerns w/ doctor or dermatologist
Going for a new cut or color, this is the perfect time to try it out

5-7 months before the BIG day
Begin skincare regime
Play around with veils and headpieces

3-4 months before the BIG Day
Book your initial hair trial appointment
Book your make-up trial appointment
Begin maintenance on your hands and feet

1-2 months before the BIG Day
Have your hair appointment with your headpiece and jewelery
Get teeth cleaned and start whitening treatment
Select your wedding day nail color
Increase your workout regime
Finalize your make-up look

1-2 weeks before the BIG Day
Schedule final hair maintenance appointments (relaxer, color touch-up, and/or trim)
Have a hydrating facial
Schedule a full body massage
Pack your wedding day beauty bag
Confirm location times with hair stylist and make-up artist for wedding day

Day before the BIG day
Have a manicure and pedicure
RELAX!!!

Budgeting Beyond The Wedding Gown

I know the defining moment for a bride...when it really hits home that she's going from a Miss to a Mrs is when she says YES TO THE DRESS!  It's a physical reaction unlike any other, at least that's what I've been told :)  But please don't get caught up into thinking that the wedding gown + tax is it for your journey when making selections about what to wear and how to look on wedding day.  There are plenty other components that must be added to the portion of your budget called...WEDDING ATTIRE.

For those of you reading the magazines and surfing the Internet, it's said that the 10-15% of the entire wedding budget should go towards wedding attire.  Please understand, that this figure includes both you and your groom, although the biggest bulk of the monies does go towards the bride and her look of the day.  Consider the WEDDING ATTIRE checklist below when making budget decisions:

Bridal gown
Alterations
Headpiece or veil
Jewelry (not your wedding bands)
Undergarments
Shoes
Hair Stylist
Make-up Artist
Manicure/Pedicure
Spa Treatments
Groom's Formal Wear, including shoes and undergarments
