Taking Care of Your Jewelry (Day #13)

Below are some GREAT tips on preserving and taking care of your jewelry and precious stones.  Thanks to Jewelers Mutual Insurance Company for this wonderful information.

Unexpected things happen.  Make sure your jewelry is protected.  Here are few tips to get started:
  • Visit your jeweler once a year to have your precious stones inspected and cleaned to detect any potential problems.
  • Salt water and jewelry do not mix.  Ocean water can damage some stones and metals.
  • Always take time to place jewelry in a secure place...not in a pocket, on the counter or in a public area
  • Remove your rings before swimming.  Fingers can constrict in water making rings more likely to fall off.
  • When traveling, keep your valuable jewelry at home of store in the hotel safe NOT the room safe.

Engagement Ring and Wedding Band Up Keep

Your fiancĂ© spent an lot of time and energy selecting the most perfect engagement ring for you.  Just like you spent a great deal of time selecting the most fabulous wedding gown for your walk down the aisle.  But during the wedding planning process and more so after the nuptials have taken place, it's a MUST for you to keep your engagement ring and wedding band up to par...and BLINGing like new!

  • Make sure to visit your jeweler yearly to check the stone to make sure it's not loose and still in place.
  • Keep the stone clean and shining like new.  Many jewelers offer free cleanings, but when taking care of your ring at home, Windex and a toothbrush will do the trick.
  • When cooking, doing housework and playing sports, remove your rings.  This will allow them to stay residue-free and vibrant.
  • Once you receive your ring, make sure to add it to your homeowners or renters insurance to make sure it's covered should anything happens.

Announcing Your Engagement

You are now engaged and I know you want to shout it to the world, but more importantly, it's a happy time in your life and you want to celebrate! After the phone calls and face-to-face visits have been made, what can you and your fiance' do to announce your desire to say..."I Do".

Consider sending a few of your family and close friends an engagement announcement. Not to get this confused with a Save The Date, the engagement announcement will showcase your names and the date you became engaged, and a photo should you have one available. No information is given about the wedding date because the wedding planning really hasn't begun.

Put an announcement in your local newspaper or online. Many papers welcome engagement and wedding announcements. At minimum it should include: a photo of the happy couple, the date you became engaged and the names of your parents.

You could also have a fun celebration or engagement party. This event is typically hosted by the bride's parents and can be as simple as cake and punch with a toast announcing your formal engagement. This would also be a great opportunity to announce your bridal party should you have already selected them to be in your wedding.

Wedding Clothespins By Design

Clothespins aren't just for hanging up your laundry anymore.  This handy household item has now become a fun wedding trend when designing a shabby-chic celebration or if you are diving into the D.I.Y (do it yourself) arena.  Check out some of the whimsical ideas we located using clothespins.

Awesome idea of using ombre-colored clothespins as a backdrop for a dessert table

Frames, ribbon, and mini clothespins makes a darling "picture" for escort cards

Cover an "ugly" wall with photos of you and your fiance' attached by clothespins to twine

You don't need ushers when you attach wedding programs to the guest chairs with ribbon and clothespins

Clothespins are a great prop for photographing the engagement ring and wedding bands

Hang your D.I.Y wedding signs by using clothespins
