Topping the Wedding Cake

As I've mentioned time and time again, the wedding cake is the showpiece of the reception!  And yes, a lot of time goes into the design, flavoring and frosting covering this beautiful confection, but how do you plan to top it off?  Check out a few cake topper ideas that just make me smile.

Topping Off Your Wedding Cake

I've mentioned numerous times that the wedding cake is the centerpiece of the reception.  With that said, one of your detailed planning decisions will become how do you want to "top-off" that gorgeous tiered confection.  The size of the cake, design and shape will all all play a role in making the decision of using a traditional cake topper, fresh or artificial flowers or a completely modern approach.

Check out some of the fabulous cake topper ideas some of our past couples have used:

A few blooms of fresh hydrangea
A bouquet of fresh flowers with a little bling detail
Simple monogram laid within a bed of roses
A sentimental phrase
Blinged single-letter monogram
A three-letter monogram

Now what idea are you thinking to complete your wedding cake design?

...I Found It, You Pin It...Friday!

My mouth fell to the floor when I found today's Pin It Pic!  I love an artistically created sugar flower, but when I saw stunning 4-tired wedding cake with a lace texture fondant on each tier accompanied by BLING and BLING initials, I was drawn to the LUSH and delicate fresh flowers in soft ivory and blush tones.  OMG!!!  What an amazing centerpiece for the wedding reception...and I bet that cake tastes delish!!! ENJOY!

Real Wedding Feature: Hareder and Michael

I'm so excited to share the pages of our first Real Wedding feature in Pretty Pear Bride, the world's only magazine for plus size women!  I met Hareder and Mike in June of 2011 and immediately started working with them to plan their amazing wedding ceremony and reception that was held at the Lincolnshire Marriott Resort on July 20, 2012.

A brief synopsis of their fabulous nuptials include: 12 bridesmaids, 12 groomsmen, 2 flower girls and the couple's beloved dog, Tater, as the ring bearer in his custom tuxedo; the groom entered the ceremony with his best men in a Porshe; the wedding party entered the ceremony in 2 limos, one for the ladies and the other for the men; the arrived in an horse drawn carriage and was escorted down the aisle by her father and grandfather. Cocktail hour was on the Pavilion Deck overlooking a beautiful fountain and the reception was held in the Pavilion all white tent. The tablescapes not only featured ivory linens with gold overlays, but gold vases of pink Gladiolas which is the bride's favorite flowers. The couple, bridal party and their mother's made a spoof of The Hangover, created  by Rush Photography and Videography, and it was played for all the guests during dinner.  All 200 guests partied and enjoyed the photo booth until almost midnight and then departed to the hotel lobby bar for the after-party that lasted past 2:00am.

Thanks again to Shafonne, Owner and Editor of Pretty Pear Bride, for featuring our beautiful couple in their "Birthday" issue!  And thanks to Mr. and Mrs. McDowell for allowing the Dejanae Events team to be apart of their awesome wedding!!!

Wedding Cake Choices

I love WEDDING CAKE!  I love wedding cake tastings with my clients! I love how all the wedding guests come to see the bride's attire at the ceremony and the fabulous wedding cake at the reception! Again, I love wedding cake!

As you begin the journey of selecting a cake designer to create your reception confection masterpiece, there are some things you want to think about in addition to cake flavors:
  • Figure out the shape you want for your wedding cake - square, circle or more modern shapes like a hexagon, oval or heart shaped.  And have an idea on how many tiers you'd like.
  • Know your frosting. Buttercream and fondant are the most popular frostings for wedding cakes with fondant being more expensive.  Buttercream does not hold up well in the heat, but if the most flavorful of the two.  Fondant holds it's shape firm and smooth as it's rolled out and draped over the wedding cake.
  • Top the cake or not.  Decide on if you want an actual cake topper on the wedding cake or would you like the florist to add fresh flowers to the top tier or the cake designer to create sugar flower blooms?
  • Decide how you want your wedding cake displayed - a cake table in the center of the dance floor or on a dessert buffet perched on a silver, gold of jeweled cake stand.  Will you add candles and rose petals around the cake?  Or use vases holding the bridesmaids bouquets to surround the cake?

So many decisions to be made...but this is the fun part of wedding planning, in my opinion.  Why?  Because you get to eat cake!  Yep, I love wedding cake!

Accessorizing the Wedding Cake

When selecting your wedding cake, either from a photo or from an actual visit with a cake designer, there are some things that you should consider.  Question - Outside of selecting the cake flavor, filling and decorative frosting, what types of design can be offered to make this cake not only taste good, but look wonderful? So let's think about designing this gorgeous piece of confection from BOTTOM to TOP.

Your wedding cake will be put on some type of base for easy transport, typically silver or gold, but if you want to give the cake more height, consider placing it up on a decorative cake stand or pedestal.

When selecting the actual design components, will you use fresh flowers or sugar flowers over an actual patterned design?  Both will offer elegance to your cake, but the cost difference is major.  Fresh flowers will always be less in cost than using actual sugar flowers.

How about adding some colored ribbon to your wedding cake tiers?  There are so many variety of ribbons (satin, grosgrain, sheer, wired, etc.) that the options and positioning are limitless.

Now what bride doesn't love a little BLING?  Adding bling to a wedding cake can take on so many different forms...from banding each or every other tier, adding bling brooch details or a burst of bling and crystals shooting out of the top tier.

And as you reach the top tier of the wedding cake, ask yourself...do I want a topper?  Know that toppers can be all sort of items...a cluster of fresh or sugar flowers, a bride and groom, an initial monogram or almost any thing you can think of.  Check out our blog post devoted to cake toppers.

Last, if your wedding cake isn't going to be served as dessert or sliced and displayed on a dessert buffet, make sure you have some fun packaging for your guests to take their yummy treat home.  Check out how DE suggests you "bag" wedding cake.

Topping on the Cake!

As I've mentioned time and time again, the wedding cake is the showpiece of the reception!  And yes, a lot of time goes into the design, flavoring and frosting covering this beautiful confection, but how do you plan to top it off?  Check out a few ideas that just make me smile.

A spin on your parent's traditional bride and groom cake topper
Fresh flowers are gorgeous on the top of your wedding cake
How about a large sugar flower or floral cluster on the beautiful confection
I never tire of a monogram cake topper with crystals, pearls...you name it!
Or skip the topper altogether and allow the ornate detailing
on the cake to speak for itself
