Trifles a.k.a. Dessert Shooters! (Day#27)

As I track my reader stats on Blogger, I see that one of the most popular blogs in WEDology by Dejanae Events history is the post about Shooters.  So here is a little insight on this tasty treat you eat with a spoon.

Trifles and shooters are desserts LAYERED in a glass bowl or you can use a shot glass when creating miniature versions.  The layers typically consist of a cake at the bottom. Then a layer of jam, fruit or combination of both.  And the final layer is a custard topped with whipped cream.  This delightful dessert has made it's debut on plenty of dessert stations, buffets and tables and guess what...I don't see it disappearing any time soon. YUM!!!

Pop+Corn=Fun! (Day#21)

Now I love a GREAT candy bar or dessert table, but have you ever given thought to a Popcorn Buffet???  One of my July 2011 brides loved the idea and purchased all varieties of Garrett's Popcorn for this fun interactive favor display for her wedding guests...accompanied by personalized popcorn boxes she ordered from an Etsy store.  Guests went wild once the Popcorn Bar was revealed and hovered around it most of the night!  Now that's a favor worth it's weight in gold...or should I say popcorn :)

Aww Sugar! Honey Honey! (Day #13)

Coffee and tea service typically happens once the wedding cake is served unless requested in advance during dinner.  Rather it be presented in a carafe on the guest tables or a coffee, tea and cake station is set-up inside of the reception space, guests tend to gravitate towards this beverage regardless of the season.  As an avid coffee lover, when I spotted this cute idea, I just had to share!

What about jazzing up that ceramic or glass coffee/tea mug with some sugar that does not come from the white, pink or blue packets.  These pretty shaped sugar "cubes" would add the finishing touch to your warm beverage.

And should you want to tackle a pretty simple DIY project, here are some easy instructions on how to make them from Nifty Thrifty Things.

My Milkshake Brings...(Day #11)

***

Who doesn't love a good milkshake?  When thinking about a dessert table/buffet...everyone always fancies it up with cake, cookies, cupcakes and candies.  But what about adding a yummy beverage that's sure to bring a smile to your guest's face?!  Milkshake shooters are hip and "cool" and from the infamous words of Kelese, "My milkshake brings all the 'guests'..."  I'll just let you finish those lyrics :)

Ohhhh...and don't forget the jazzy straw to finish off your creamy delight!

Pies Have It!

In celebration of Thanksgiving 2011 (I know I'm a little late :) and my love of Sweet Potato Pie, consider adding these All-American desserts to wedding or event line up.  Just as the layers of your wedding cake can be a variety of flavors, so can the pie selections you have on display.  Check out some of these ideas:

Have a wonderful dessert table that includes the couples favorite pies
or some pies created from family recipes

How cute are these cupcakes styled like cherry and pumpkin pies!
Not cake pops...PIE POPS on a dessert table or as favors :)
Tier delicious assorted mini pies on a cupcake stand

Consider mini pies as guest favors placed in a personalized boxes
as a way of saying 'thank you' to your guests

Marshmallows...a Fluffy Delight!

I've been seeing tons of posts and pictures about mini cupcakes and cake pops, but don't forget the newest dessert craze positioned beautifully on dessert buffets and even as favors...the marshmallow!  Now, I'm not speaking about the "Camp Fire" brand, but those delicately created by confection divas hosting a wide range of flavors.  I was so inspired to create this post when one of my favorite confection-ista's just announced that after five years of making wonderfully delicious truffles, she's now bringing out a tasty line of marshmallow treats just in time for the holidays :)  Congratulations Katherine-Anne Confections and check out her blog post for more details!!!

Now onto a little photo inspiration:

It's Written In Chalk

In spite of my paper fetish, I do like the idea of chalkboards to convey some of the wedding day events.  Now I might not consider using chalkboards at a black tie affair, but think about these options for your semi-formal or informal wedding style.
Have a chalkboard on or near the bar listing the beverages available

Use the chalkboard to showcase the goodies available on your dessert bar

The chalkboard is GREAT to translate directions
so that guests don't take the wrong route

Chalkboard cab replace the standard escort cards

In place of menu cards, use the chalkboard to convey the reception meal

In place of wedding programs, list the key players
on a chalkboard just outside of the ceremony location

Bagging The Cake

With dessert stations becoming more and more popular, the wedding cake is likely to be cut and displayed alongside other delicious treats.  But, should you want guests to take home a slice of cake or a cupcake, provide some packaging for this to happen.  And for the couples who aren't that fond of giving out guest favors, ask the caterer to package the wedding cake and display on platters for guests to take as they depart the reception.  It makes a great favor, late night snack and you are almost guaranteed no leftovers.

And remember to add a personalized touch by adding your names, monogram or decorative enhancements to the packaging.

Really?! Shooters for Dessert!

I've come across my 1st bride for the 2011 wedding season that does not like cake. Now I've informed her that I still plan on cake tasting on her behalf, but will come up with an alternative for her dessert after the entree. A fake wedding cake will be involved for the cake cutting ceremony, plus one of my newest loves...dessert shooters. These yummy little shots of heaven typically contain crumbled cake, a pudding or whipped cream, and fresh fruit stacked inside of a shot glass.

Can't you see it... Your guests are seated, feeling good after that GREAT entree you provided, and now comes out on a dainty saucer with a cute little spoon to match - a dessert shooter reminiscent of you and the groom's favorite dessert. Watch for the smiles after first the sloooooowwww bite!

Dessert on a Stick!

I was totally inspired this weekend when my October couple and I visited the pastry chef to design their wedding cake and select their tiered flavors. A yummy blend of chocolate cake with a sour cherry filling was the winner and I immediately thought of those round Cherry Cordials candies. In search for a dessert along those lines, I discovered the "Cake Pop" craze and was too delighted! It's just as it sounds - cake + stick = cake pop.

I've included some visuals and a recipe on how you can create this cute confection yourself. They'd make a great addition to any dessert table, bridal shower or rehearsal dinner. Hey, make plenty and have them as your guest favors. One batch will make about 40-50 pops.

This is your basic cake pop from http://www.cakepopcrush.com/. No frills. Just plain, simple and delicious. It’s a great first project for newbies.

  • Make a 13×9 cake. Any flavor you like, just follow the instructions on the box. Let it cool. Crumble the cake and add in 1 can of frosting (or blend 8oz of softened cream cheese, 4 tbls. of butter, 2 cups of powdered sugar, and 1 tbl. of milk together until smooth) and place in the fridge for 15 minutes or until firm.
  • After refrigerating, dust off your Playdoh skills and form the mixture into balls. Then place a sucker stick into the top of each cake ball. Pop them into the refrigerator for another quarter hour.
  • While waiting, start melting your candy melts.
  • After 15 minutes in the fridge, dip and swirl each pop into your candy melt.
Once you’ve got an even coating on the cake pop, place the stick into a Styrofoam block while the candy melt shell hardens.
  • Announce to your family and friends that the cake pops are ready. Be prepared to break up fights.
